LEGISLATIVE ALERT
CAHU-Opposed SB 810 (Leno) Set for Special Hearing January 17
I have to let you know about a fast-track action in the Legislature that will directly affect all CAHU members. CAHU was just notified by our lobbyists Mike Belote and Juli Broyles, that the Senate Appropriations Committee gave unexpected notice that the highly controversial, CAHU-opposed SB 810 will be heard next Tuesday, January 17, 2012.
I am asking CAHU members to immediately send a letter (Click here for sample letter) to the chair of the committee, Senator Christine Kehoe, indicating your strong opposition to SB 810's proposed single payer, government-run health care system.
The Hon. Christine Kehoe
Chair, Senate Appropriations Committee
California State Senate
State Capitol, Room 5050
Sacramento, CA 95814
SB 810, authored by Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) creates the California Universal Healthcare Act administered by a proposed new California Healthcare Agency. This new agency, through the decisions of a new health insurance commissioner, is tasked to set single standard of care for all California residents. Under SB 810, no health care service plan contract or health insurance policy except for the California Health Insurance System plan, could be sold in California for services provided by the single payer system. The proposed system would make all California residents eligible for coverage and sets "residency" to be a "physical presence in the state with the intent to reside." All Californians will be required to buy into the system through a unspecified premium tax set by SB 810's proposed Premium Commission.
The letter reminds the Chair, and the Committee, that California is already hard at work implementing PPACA, and a state-run Exchange program. Please, also, send a copy of your letter to your own Senator (Click here to find your legislator).
As an agent myself, I understand it takes time from a busy day to act on and send this letter. But CAHU needs our members to reach out to California legislators, as their constituents, to let them know of the concerns about SB 810's flawed single payer system.
This is a CAHU Team effort. Together, we speak with one voice, and that voice is strong as long as we speak as a Team. And know that your help is deeply appreciated by me and the entire CAHU Board!
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Linda Rose Koehler
CAHU President
